Servant Leadership Formation Weekend
This nomination-only event brings together student leaders from across Loyola University New Orleans for a weekend of formation.
Bigger than just a retreat, we see the weekend as an opportunity to mentor and develop the leaders of tomorrow. We had the honor to have Burke Whitman, Major General U.S.M.C. Ret and Fortune 500 CEO, as our keynote speaker. General Whitman explained that leadership is inextricably linked to and inseparable from service. He talked with the students about virtue development, how to learn and use some practical tools for leadership, leadership principles and how to inspire people and teams through service. Some of his most important bits of wisdom included:
- Focus primarily down and across the organization, on the people you lead, and on your team peers. Focus less on the organization, on impressing those to whom you report - that comes automatically.
-Understand, reach, and enter the souls of the people, instilling a sense of commitment and purpose.
Fr. Aaron Pidel, S.J., professor at Marquette University and the Pontifical Gregorian University, provided the students with formation in Ignatian values in his talks on St. Ignatius of Loyola's strengths as an inspirational leader. Fr. Pidel focused especially on how St. Ignatius' leadership relied on the practice of the virtue of prudence - the virtue of the leader par excellence.
The weekend also included time for students to rest and reflect in the beautiful surroundings of Grand Couteau and concluded with a celebratory bonfire. We are thankful for an amazing weekend thanks to our speakers and these young men and women who worked together and encouraged each other towards excellence in service and leadership.
