Cultivating Future Leaders: The Second Annual Servant Leadership Retreat
The second annual Servant Leadership Retreat, held on March 15-17, 2024, in partnership with Canizaro Catholic Studies, was a resounding success.
Seventeen students from Loyola University New Orleans, nominated by faculty for their demonstrated and potential servant leadership qualities, participated in this enriching experience. From insightful discussions led by esteemed speakers to engaging activities like Strengthsfinder sessions with Dr. Susie Veters, every moment was filled with inspiration and growth.
Setting the Tone: Deacon Larry Oney
The retreat kicked off on Friday with a powerful session by Deacon Larry Oney, CEO of HGI Global and founder of Hope and Purpose Ministries. Deacon Oney set the tone for the weekend, urging students to embrace their potential as servant leaders and align their lives with their mission and purpose. His words resonated deeply, encouraging participants to reflect on their own journeys and the impact they can make through purposeful leadership.
Discovering Strengths: Dr. Susie Veters
On Saturday, Dr. Susie Veters, an Adjunct Professor of Pastoral Ministry at Notre Dame Seminary Graduate School of Theology and a CliftonStrengths professional, guided students through their Strengthsfinder reports. Each student had previously completed the Strengthsfinder assessment, and Dr. Veters illuminated their unique talents and strengths. This session was not only insightful but also empowering, as students gained a better understanding of how to leverage their strengths in their leadership roles.
The Sacred Trust of Leadership: Jordan Jones S.J.
The retreat concluded with a profound session by Jordan Jones S.J. of the Jesuits Central and Southern Province. Jones explored the sacred trust of leadership, emphasizing the importance of presence, competence, and confidence. His guidance helped students appreciate the spiritual dimensions of leadership and the responsibility that comes with guiding others.
Spiritual Guidance and Support
A special note of gratitude goes to Fr. Jordan DeGuire O.P. from Aquinas College, who served as a group discussion leader throughout the retreat. Fr. DeGuire provided invaluable spiritual support, facilitating deep conversations and leading the masses over the weekend. His presence and guidance were instrumental in creating a reflective and nurturing environment for the students.
A Weekend of Growth and Inspiration
The second annual Servant Leadership Retreat was an unforgettable experience for all involved. The combination of expert guidance, reflective activities, and spiritual nourishment provided a holistic approach to leadership development. The students left the retreat not only with a deeper understanding of their strengths and leadership potential but also with a renewed commitment to serving others with integrity and purpose.
